Throughout The Kid, Schroeder taps into an endless well of homey, roots rock inspiration, from Wilco to Neil Young. By pairing a pitch-perfect ability to capture that energy with a vivid imagination, Schroeder reaches something that’s not quite present and not quite past, part nostalgia and part exploration of a new reality. “These songs just flowed easily,” he says. “I just let go and accepted the fact that this record would be a product of its circumstances. I wanted to capture the different parts of my mind, country and rock, stories from my life and from characters. I just need to record songs that are important to my life and share them with the world.”

lyrics

Stumble back into the ally
With lighting in my veins
Eighteen years been stuck in this valley
And the lighting was to blame
I was booting it, now I’m shooting it
And moving is my name
I was all set up to be somebody
Now I’m kicking in the rain

Wyoming, I’m coming home when
The jailer calls my name
The station in my imagination
Is letting me off the train
I’m walking in chains
But I’ll be back again

Each face passed by the bars
Reminds myself of me
Killing time out in the jail yard
Reminds me I’m not free
Now I’m missing it
Wishing I was kissing it
The wall’s too high to see
The buffalo and the friends I know
I left in Laramie

Wyoming, I’m coming home when
The jailer calls my name
The station in my imagination
Is letting me off the train
I’m walking in chains
But I’ll be back again

Stumble back, you know I’m wishing
There was water in my well
Four more years inside of this prison
And I’m going on to tell
How I was listening now I’m whistling
A song I knew so well
I was all set up to be somebody
Now I’m sitting in a cell

Wyoming, I’m coming home when
The jailer calls my name
The station in my imagination
Is letting me off the train
I’m walking in chains
But I’ll be back again
