Throughout The Kid, Schroeder taps into an endless well of homey, roots rock inspiration, from Wilco to Neil Young. By pairing a pitch-perfect ability to capture that energy with a vivid imagination, Schroeder reaches something that’s not quite present and not quite past, part nostalgia and part exploration of a new reality. “These songs just flowed easily,” he says. “I just let go and accepted the fact that this record would be a product of its circumstances. I wanted to capture the different parts of my mind, country and rock, stories from my life and from characters. I just need to record songs that are important to my life and share them with the world.”

lyrics

Moving to the country
I tried so hard to stop
Gonna bring my pitcher down to the river
Gonna fill it to the top
Ramshackle city, tax paying dues
The richest man won’t shake my hand
But he’ll put holes in my shoes
Maybe handsome molly
Will make this house a home
We’ll milk the cows and kill the sow
Once her babies have all grown
I wish I were in london
Or some other seaport town
Away I’d row in a wooden boat
And sail the ocean round

Moving to the country
I got to get away
From the cars and the planes
And all the disdain that makes me feel this way
I am just a tadpole
And I can’t lose my tail
Or learn to breathe air if no one cares
I win or if I fail

Would you even notice
If I began to rust?
Or if my pond dried up in the sun
And I was left in the dust
Wayfaring stranger
Tell me what to do
For I’ve grown up with bad, bad luck
So can I follow you?
The rooster calls the morning
Out of her front door
Gonna have me a daughter and drink me some water
From the puddle on the floor
Remember handsome molly
The flowers in your hair
Where the river flows is where I’ll go
And can you meet me there?

Moving to the country
I got to get away
From the cars and the planes
And all the disdain that makes me feel this way
I am just a tadpole
And I can’t lose my tail
Or learn to breathe air if no one cares
I win or if I fail

from The Kid, released April 20, 2021
Prior to and during the mandatory quarantine, I was raising tadpoles that I had caught into frogs. Watching them grow, lose their tails, grow limbs, go from an underwater life to one of land, really had an immense psychological impact on me, it got me thinking about growth. Locked away in my room, I wrote a song about breaking away, growing up, and learning to walk.
