about
Semiprecious was recorded towards the end of the Sports EP and showcases a love for
semiprecious gems, or in a more general sense, anything that is deemed second rate.
Whether that pertains to jobs, clothing, hobbies, or abilities - being the best or having the
best things is often overrated. This song was conceived entirely on his piano, and when the
drum loops came from his mpc 200xl, it quickly morphed into a song. Fender rhodes was
also used for the bass notes, and for the shimmering high notes in the chorus. Later, guitar
and a late 60’s string synth/combo organ were added to fill the mix. Musically, this was
inspired by modern indie acts and friends Still Woozy, Legwurk, and Bobbing.
lyrics
Verse
Add more color to your day,
Clashing pattern, mix in flames
Faux fur rocks the night away,
Make it trashy, I like it fake
Let’s all wear some pretty things
Bad boy glitter, is my dream
But I don’t need designer clothes
Your fancy rocks, your tacky rings
Chorus
I like them semiprecious anyway
Got my moonstones baby and I got my jade
You know I had a diamond once but it got away
But I prefer my crystal that is how I play
Oh I got the real shit on layaway
But you can’t tell the difference cause it’s all the same
You know I had a diamond once but it got away
But I prefer my crystal that is how I play
Chorus Outro
I pierced my ear, with a paperclip and, my best friend
I got a tattoo, it was a stick and poke of, a funny dude

Extra Verse
Gems, Gems everywhere when I’m walking down the street
Semiprecious is the thing with everyone I meet
I see you looking at my stones, I’m covered head to toe
Let’s be friends we’re semiprecious like everyone I know

Love this record so much! Satisfies my early Boards of Canada needs, with a touch of Floyd and the Stranger Things OSTs thrown in. No to mention it’s own progressive elements. Can’t recommend highly enough! Jay Hodgson
