Throughout The Kid, Schroeder taps into an endless well of homey, roots rock inspiration, from Wilco to Neil Young. By pairing a pitch-perfect ability to capture that energy with a vivid imagination, Schroeder reaches something that’s not quite present and not quite past, part nostalgia and part exploration of a new reality. “These songs just flowed easily,” he says. “I just let go and accepted the fact that this record would be a product of its circumstances. I wanted to capture the different parts of my mind, country and rock, stories from my life and from characters. I just need to record songs that are important to my life and share them with the world.”

lyrics

Look at me falling down, bleeding out
What does it matter?
Blood eyes realize changing times
Radio chatter
Here I am, my daddy’s son and the one
With nothing to gather
Fall asleep, read and weep, empty streets
What are they after?
Maria says, “I’m alone, no one’s home,
Can I hear your laughter”
No, my dear for I fear if someone hears
What could come after

I don’t know if I’ll come home from Mexico
I don’t know if I even want a home
I don’t know if I’ll come home from Mexico
‘Cause I’m falling in love with being alone

A brown eyed boy came to me said to me,
“Are you my pa?”
“For if you are, you’ve been far, stole our car
And broken the law”
Listen close amigo, I don’t know
What you think you saw
Sink or swim ‘cause I aint him but even then
I’d call it a draw
Then I said, “Tell me kid, is mama in?
Cause I know you ain't got no pa
And if she’s quaint, I’ll hope she aint,
I’ll lick the paint off of her walls”

I don’t know if I’ll come home from Mexico
I don’t know if I even want a home
I don’t know if I’ll come home from Mexico
‘Cause I’m falling in love with being alone
