about

Train of Thought, the third full length release by Kamloops, British Columbia based psych quartet Mother Sun is a 12 song day trip through an overstimulated frame of mind. Using 60’s and 70’s psych pop, garage rock, jazz and soul as a jumping off point, the band refines their modern eclectic storytelling through lush and adventurous arrangements, highlighted by abstract hooks, velvety strings and triumphant horns.

Songs
The record begins with the laid back, bossa-nova influenced title track acting as a framing device, with the following tracks traveling through stream of consciousness narratives which are at times relaxed and almost bored, and at others robotic, rough and tense, displaying the band’s skillful adaptation to their diverse songwriting. Jazz inspired grooves drive Train of Thought, Webbed Feet and Smoke City, which are balanced handily by noisy garage jams like Mr. Help You and Orange Colossus. The latter is the album’s most adventurous track that shifts between angry fuzzed out riffs in the verses, melodic, string driven choruses, and a sprawling psychedelic bridge. It’s a mission statement of sorts from a band that can’t sit still. Tangerine Beach adds catchy synths and horns to the neon energy of sparkling out of reach beaches, which Jared’s vocals sarcastically compare to a nice advertisement. The band showcases their strengths of unique arrangements and tight chemistry as the record progresses, experimenting with time signatures and more progressive song structures on the record’s second half. After the lilting intro of (pedaling), Cycling and For Sale are anxious, frenetic, riff heavy psych rock songs that observe robotic monotony and the elusive dream of rural home ownership. Blue Dream is a pretty piano tune that’s over soon. Smoke City evokes imagery of smoked out apocalyptic skies, a frequent summer occurrence in recent years as a result of wildfires. A walk down the alley of (flipped upper lip) takes the listener to the Memory Banker to erase their mind and start all over again.

Production
The record was recorded primarily live off the floor at Little Red Sounds Studio in Vancouver BC by producer Felix Fung. Train of Thought is anxiously optimistic in tone and captures a nervous twitchy energy offset with periods of stretched out kaleidoscopic contemplation. Intertwined wavy guitars, vibey synths and focused, detailed drum beats are supported by a revolving door of backing instrumentation that creates a powerful sound the band has slowly refined over their previous two LPs, 2019’s Caramel Clouds and 2020’s SIPS. Mother Sun teamed up with a variety of musicians from their hometown of Kamloops BC, notably a string quartet from the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra. Horn arrangements written by two members of the band were performed by Vancouver based musicians Anita Eccleston and Mike WT Allen.
