"I wrote this song kneeled on my living room rug with my trans ex-boyfriend, who I joke is my ex-husband because we’re still so close. The song isn’t happy, but it's triumphant. I see it as a declaration to a culture that told me I was a monster all my life. Casting aside that judgemental gaze to proudly say: No I’m fucking not and I don’t give a damn who disagrees. I didn't fully believe the words when I wrote them, but now I do. This song still holds so much power for me."
