‘Five Leaves : Fish & Chips’ is a double single by Canadian psych quartet Mother Sun, due out for digital release February 26th, 2021 on Earth Libraries and Divine Bovine Records. Both songs were produced by Mother Sun, and mastered by David Parry of the band Loving.

‘Five Leaves’ evokes dreamlike imagery, loose associations to The Band and Nick Drake, and blurry memories of a show at retired Vancouver venue Static Jupiter. Jangly and fuzzy guitars, delicate keys and a tight yet playful rhythm section set the mood, and the song alternates between pensive, stretched out verses and lively choruses elevated by the band’s discount horn section, before shuffling into a droning dream sequence in the bridge.

‘Five Leaves’ was recorded live off the floor as a guitar, drums and bass trio, and engineered by the band’s Emilio Pagnotta at Divine Bovine Records in Kamloops, BC. Keys, vocals, another guitar and horns were added later.

‘Fish & Chips’ was recorded separately by each band member at home in the early stages of quarantine in April 2020. It is a lighthearted narrative from the perspective of a shipwrecked sailor making DIY fish and chips on a tropical beach, while getting drunk and wondering if the camera crew he sees on the moon is real. Vocalists’ Jared Doherty and Emilio Pagnotta’s voices form a trippy internal dialogue about the strange way a far-fetched conspiracy theory can grab hold of one’s subconscious.

Musically the song sounds like the inside of a bright blue aquarium. Floating keys play off surf guitars, organ swells and gentle droning horns, while a bluesy bass and creative percussion add to the tight drum machine-ish performance by drummer Jared Wilman.
