Face Tapes was conceived almost by accident when Hunter decided to start recording the songs he was writing by himself in his studio. He had built the studio with the idea of using it on collaborative projects, but it had been sitting practically unused. He started out just wanting to record a single song, but within a few months he found himself with enough material to release an EP, so he buckled down and started getting serious. The result is the 5-track Face Tapes EP.

Sonically, it is designed to be wide-ranging. It is also the first time Hunter has sung lyrics in his tunes. The EP features epic instrumental post rock, surf music, acoustic-based bedroom pop, and more. The entire EP was performed and recorded by Hunter in his tiny studio with the exception of three drum tracks.
