Some people choose the pages of a diary to spill their innermost feelings and recount their trials and tribulations. Instead, Chayse Porter has a palace. “It's this metaphorical place where I can go to express myself and feel safe,” he explains. “Like the Beach Boys ‘In My Room’, it's this place where you can get all your secrets out in the open and feel at home.” But rather than luxuriate in his regal mental abode, Porter’s latest for Earth Libraries takes listeners on a grand tour, revealing the nooks and crannies of his heart and mind.

1.
Purpling dawn Filtering through Shredded sheer curtains Then onto you The way it cuts through the room Leaving nowhere For shadows to remain We can now share our shame Tethered and tenderly Arrested in this dungeon cell Confusing, ethereal So immaterial Pursuing thoughts Leave you all alone Waltz through the fog Dancing through darkness My palace doors Open wide Tethered and tenderly Arrested in this dungeon cell Confusing, ethereal It’s all that I can do To keep from laughing at myself When I think of you Think of you You

Jetlag 03:41
Staring down a long night Stuck on a plane without you I’m headed home, I’m heading home I can barely hear the silence Drowned out by the engine hum Out my window, carryin’ me home To Birmingham Through the dark, I’m wide awake Through my second Cabernet I left my dreams so far away Bird in my hand, two in the pot Longing to hold what I never caught Chasing the fog that’s burnin off Sink into my chair and close my eyes I could never sleep on these things But when I’m with you, I get real close Through the dark, I’m wide awake Through my second Cabernet I left my dreams back in the bay Bird in my hand, two in the pot Longing to hold what I never caught Chasing the fog that’s burnin off

I turned the page Then I wash my hands clean Today, I learned to Leave the blue behind Yeah, that’s where I left it to die I could have lied Told myself my hands were tied That would only lead to Shoehorned smiles And nobody wants that Nobody wants that Nobody wants that Nobody wants that Now I’m counting up All the ways I’d like to grow Celebrate the journey All that led me to you ‘Cause nobody wants that Nobody wants you Nobody wants that Nobody wants you (more than me)

Penny 03:20
I’ve seen it in my dreams Lush strings and timpani A satisfaction steady It’s something undefined Tougher than turpentine Softer than new suede Beyond imagination My dream is real Been on my mind Penny for your thoughts surrendered Spent all my time Saving up the sense There’s beauty in decay I’m learning more every day So nice of you to notice Don’t wrestle for resolve Just lean right into the dark It’s getting brighter now Been on my mind Penny for your thoughts surrendered Spent all my time Saving up the sense to have ya Coming to life Serving indulgence unfiltered Brought into light Blossoming in spite of myself

Heat Lamp 03:22
Beside myself Upon your shelf Inside a jar Is where I dwell Come take me down Unscrew my lid Dissect my life Tell me how I did Holding back Has only hurt The safest ear For my concerns Knowing that I’m warming up Your eyes like a heat lamp For my heart Yearning to explore the uncharted Wrought with demand For architectural plans Frame up the walls Pack up the moving van Inside my house All made of glass I hope you see I’m learning fast Holding back Has only hurt The safest ear For my concerns Knowing that I’m warming up Your eyes like a heat lamp For my heart Yearning to explore the uncharted

Palace Doors 02:53
Far beyond the Palace doors, across the provincial patchwork, unto the shore, Past the salty sea, and just a bit further more, lived a young man named Chay He lived out his days, Quite akin to thine, Sprinkled with pleasures of the sordid kind A mortal being with a restless mind, Chay feared most his own reflection But like any other pond, Bending light from a purpling dawn, Ripples doth twist and pervert the most angelic swans Chay knew this; he was not alone in his quest So, casting aside his own self doubt Leaving the candied comforts of home, The old boy planned his route, Not knowing how - or when, It would come about Chay’s pursuit... was resolute Surely, he would stumble, as many do The occasional crawl would be necessary too Nevertheless, across the grand horizon - cerulean blue, Awaited fortunes greater than any imagination could detail Chay could sense that he was close, he could feel it in his bones What would await him? Fame, adoration, or precious stones? By the grace of universal forces unknown, Our dear boy would soon behold “What’s this?! From where doth that music play?” he bellowed. Lush strings, a beautiful arrangement of violin and cello Pouring out the Palace doors, glowing yellow Smoothing over the valley floor, landing softly on Chay’s ear His pace, from a trudge to a fervent run He galloped through the tall grass, racing a setting sun Oh, but the splendor that lie ahead, could not be matched by anyone The bridge lowered as Chay approached The Palace doors open wide as he draweth nigh Chay took 3 steps in and couldn’t believe his eyes He’d seen this place before, had heard the chattering of the same magpies In a dream, a distant dream, as hazy as the twilight Chay felt at home again, a peace behind the stone walls A peace of mind, within his mind, he’d never once recalled Our dear Chay could finally say, he had the wherewithal To never stop loving, to always give his all

Pacific Inn 04:03
It’s such a quick drive from Palo Alto I thought I’d pack up and go Soak up the day light And landslide of memories Down at the boardwalk, Santa Cruz We’d spent the afternoon Sipping from paper cups, Roaming the streets Take me back to that night Back to the room Back to your arms I got the day to kill, and I got the sun The kids are all having fun It’s such a shame You had to miss out It’s been too long a day without you here I wish you’d reappear I hear the roosters Callin’ our names Take me back to that night Back to the room Back to your arms (When I saw you, running towards me in the sand, that’s when I knew...) Take me back to that night Back to the room Back to your arms
9.
I had a dream that I shaved my head Been so long since the back of my neck Felt the breeze of my old neighborhood I climbed up on the roof Just to see if I could See if I could, see you from here I wonder what you’re doing now Do you sleep easily Now that you’re on your own And you sleep without me Sleep without me, sleep without me These shifting sands do shape our love Pouring from two empty cups This heavy hand of mine did bring Early closure to splendid things It’s hard to know I’m doing right by you Not by your side I’d like to think I’m wrong, feel the strength in our divide ‘Cause in my dream I felt the warming sun Gently reminding me of a purpling dawn Purpling dawn, purpling dawn These shifting sands do shape our love Pouring from two empty cups This heavy hand of mine did bring Early closure to splendid things

Blue Star 02:55
Blue star, Gleaming down on the road Screaming silently Burning up the night Way out, On the Western Freeway Past the neon glow Far beyond the known Guide me through this life Sit back, In my old leather seat Thinking quietly Of that blue star Carefully hung In the sky up above Shining on my dreams And everyone I love Keep them in my life

Yoshi 05:07
I see you every now and then It fills this spot in my heart, you fit right in These happy days, you’ve given me You’re everything the world wishes to see Lucky me Sending all my lovin’ angel Carry it with you on your walks without me I’ll be waiting, anticipating your loving arms Yoshi, even though she owns you We can still be friends And hang on weekends Sending all my lovin’ angel Carry it with you on your walks without me I’ll be waiting, anticipating your loving arms Sending all my lovin’ angel Carry it with you on your walks without me I’ll be waiting, anticipating your loving arms
